They're killed when they're babies, at mere months old. Calves, piglets, chicks. A fraction of a life, and one filled with suffering and fear. It's not right. But we don't have to do this! We don't have to eat meat, it's so easy not to. Please, a life is worth more than the fleeting pleasure of a meal.

"I used to think truth was eternal, that once I knew, once I saw, it would be with me forever, a constant by which everything else could be measured. "Why this deficiency? Because much of the design is done by engineers who are experts in technology but limited in their understanding of people. 'We are people ourselves,' they think, 'so we understand people.' But in fact, we humans are amazingly complex. Those who have not studied human behavior often think it is pretty simple. Engineers, moreover, make the mistake of thinking that logical explanation is sufficient: 'If only people would read the instructions,' they say, 'everything would be all right.' Engineers are trained to think logically. As a result, they come to believe that all people must think this way, and they design their machines accordingly. When people have trouble, the engineers are upset, but often for the wrong reason. 'What are these people doing?' they will wonder. 'Why are they doing that?' The problem with the designs of most engineers is that they are too logical. We have to accept human behavior the way it is, not the way we would wish it to be."
"I used to be an engineer, focused upon technical requirements, quite ignorant of people. Even after I switched into psychology and cognitive science, I still maintained my engineering emphasis upon logic and mechanism. It took a long time for me to realize that my understanding of human behavior was relevant to my interest in the design of technology. As I watched people struggle with technology, it became clear that the difficulties were caused by the technology, not the people."

"But we were sleeping. Iโve been sleeping. And Iโve been turning away from the truth I wanted not to face. There is a wound that wonโt heal at the center of the galaxy. There is a darkness reaching like rust into everything around us. We let it grow, and now itโs here. Itโs here, and itโs not visiting anymore. It wants to stay. The Empire is a disease that thrives in darkness, it is never more alive than when we sleep. Itโs easy for the dead to tell you to fight, and maybe itโs true, maybe fighting is useless. Perhaps itโs too late. But Iโll tell you thisโฆ If I could do it again, Iโd wake up early and be fighting these bastards from the start. Fuck the Empire!"

"There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they've already enlisted in the cause. Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. And then remember this. The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire's authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this. Try."

"A monk asked Ts'ui-wei, 'For what reason did the First Patriarch come from the West?' Ts'ui-wei answered, 'Pass me that chin-rest.' As soon as the monk passed it, Ts'ui-wei hit him with it. Another master was having tea with two of his students when he suddenly tossed his fan to one of them, saying, 'What's this?' The student opened it and fanned himself. 'Not bad,' was his comment. 'Now you,' he went on, passing it to the other student, who at once closed the fan and scratched his neck with it. This done, he opened it again, placed a piece of cake on it, and offered it to the master. This was considered even better, for when there are no names the world is no longer 'classified in limits and bounds.'"

I am tired of big tech's enshittified spyware surveilling every glance I make, commodifying my attention, and in the moments not voyeuring plastering my vision with base, wretched advertisements.
Ditch their pathetic offerings. Their easy convenience is an etherising lure. There's a whole community of everyday people who make free, open, clean, private alternatives. Some might lack a bit of polish. Some might even be a bit clunky. But they're honest, and open, and anything you want to change or fix or improve you can make those changes.
